Behind The Scenes
GET TO KNOW @BIANCATHEDESIGNER OF BIANCA’S DESIGN SHOP
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF & YOUR BUSINESS?
Hi, I’m Bianca! My pronouns are she/they and I’m a Queer Gender-fluid Latinx designer and artist from Queens, NY! I run Bianca’s Design Shop, an online-based store that features inclusive LGBTQ+ Pride enamel pins, accessories and apparel.
You can visit my shop at https://biancadesigns.co and find me on Instagram and TikTok @biancadesigns, Facebook @biancasdesignshop and Twitter @biancanegron.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
While working a full-time job, I followed other artists and always wondered what it would be like to have my own brand. My favorites were Benny Gold and AdamJK, who ran their own businesses in different ways. My mentor and friends would also tell me that I was talented, and that I could start my own shop if I wanted to. I thought working full-time was pretty cool—I worked on some dope projects for clients—and it was nice to have something secure, but I also found that doing my own passion projects was so much more fulfilling. So, all of that kind of hit me and I made the decision to start my own shop!
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK?
So many things inspire me! Artists I love (and follow) who make minimal bold designs, my surroundings, rainbows in the sky, vintage graphic design, work from Bauhaus, etc.
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND & HOW DID THAT SUPPORT IN CREATING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I have a background in Graphic and Web Design! I’m mostly self-taught, but I did go to community college and study New Media Technology, which gave me the building blocks for what I know now. My education, combined with experience, helped a lot when starting my own business. I also helped my previous employer build their own shop, which gave me some insight. With my experiences, I was able to build my own website and create graphics for marketing pretty quickly. There’s a lot more that goes into it, though, so I still had to research and learn so much!
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST SUCCESS IN YOUR BUSINESS SO FAR?
I think my biggest success has been creating my Wavy Pride pin series, which I created after opening my shop. It features over 30 different flags within a unique design, so it provides representation to a lot of folks. It really seems to resonate with so many people! I’m happy and proud to be able to create products that make folks feel seen.
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE BACKGROUND BEHIND SOME OF THE DESIGNS YOUR CREATED FOR THE STICKER SHEET?
For our sticker sheet, I wanted to create pride designs that are fun, vibrant and represent our joyful, loving and supportive community. In most of my designs, I like to use the QPOC (Queer People of Color) and Trans Pride flag colors to show inclusivity and make the lines wavy to make it more fluid and inviting. Each color is either connected or playing with one another like in the Inclusive Rainbow! I chose to use the message “Inclusion Matters” because inclusion is so important right now and the statement is meant to be for everyone.
WHAT DOES PRIDE MEAN TO YOU?
To me, Pride means being your true self unapologetically, being proud of who you are and celebrating that either with yourself, family or coming together with the community!
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT FAVORITE PRODUCT FROM OLE HENRIKSEN?
I’m not the best at choosing favorites, but I really love the Balance It All™ Oil Control & Pore-Refining Set that includes the cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. It smells so good!
