HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU EXFOLIATE YOUR FACE?
Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? It turns out—yes.
There are few things as satisfying as touching your face after using exfoliating scrub and marveling at how smooth your skin feels.
You might be tempted to do it all day, every day to chase that “ooh so soft” feeling, but there are a few things you need to consider.
To clarify, we’re going to be focusing on physical exfoliation today, rather than chemical exfoliation. What’s the difference? In short, physical exfoliation uses small particles—we use sugar, salt, walnut powder and Icelandic volcanic sand—to scrub away rough, flaky skin and let smoother skin glow through. Chemical exfoliation, on the other hand, involves acids—such as AHAs and BHAs—to loosen the “glue” that holds the dead surface layer of skin together (cute, right?) and reveal the newer, fresher skin underneath.
Want to know more about chemical exfoliation? Don’t worry, that post is coming.
So, how often should you exfoliate your face? We say 2-3 times a week for normal and combination skin, and 1-2 times a week if you’re sensitive. Over-exfoliating can cause irritation or—in a cruel twist of fate—lead to more dryness and flaking (you know, the reasons you started exfoliating to begin with).
We also recommend physical exfoliation at night after cleansing. That way, your freshly unveiled skin has the chance to soak in all the benefits of your nighttime skincare routine before going out into the world.
Ready to say goodbye to roughness and reveal radiant skin? Here are our favorite physical exfoliators:
Transform Walnut Scrub with walnut powder, ginseng and chamomile extracts, is an insider favorite for a reason. This vegan face scrub is the best face exfoliator for leaving skin super soft, smooth and smelling sweet.
Pore-Balance™ Facial Sauna Scrub, with Icelandic volcanic sand, Green Fusion Complex™ and neem seed oil, is inspired by the detoxifying benefits of the Scandinavian sauna cycle. This exfoliating scrub warms on contact, then cools as you massage away dirt, oil and any rough skin.
Can’t decide between masking and exfoliating? You don’t have to. Moment of Truth™ 2-in-1 Polishing Sugar Mask made with pure honey, rosehip oil and pumpkin extract, starts as a nourishing facial mask. Then, thanks to raw sugar and pomegranate seed powder, it becomes an exfoliating scrub that smoothes away dead skin cells that can dull the skin.
Don’t forget about body scrub! Rub n’ Buff® Transforming Salt Scrub is a creamy body exfoliator made with sea salt and lemongrass and lavender oils. It was inspired by the signature experiences at the OLEHENRIKSEN Spa in West Hollywood to leave skin touchably soft and silky and invigorate the senses.
Now that you’ve unveiled softer, smoother skin, it’s important to hydrate and keep that glow going. C-Rush™ Brightening Gel Crème delivers an energizing burst of 24-hour hydration, and it brightens, firms and targets visible signs of aging.
